Simpson Housing Services began as an emergency overnight shelter in the basement of Simpson United Methodist Church in 1982. Simpson has since become a leading nonprofit providing assistance to people experiencing homelessness. In response to un-met community needs, our programs have grown to include emergency shelter, single adult supportive housing, and family supportive housing. We work across the metro area, partnering with landlords and developers to find affordable housing for all families and individuals. At any given time, we provide supportive services to 100 individuals and 200 families with over 400 children. How Can You Contribute? Diversion will be utilized at the front door of the homeless response system as a client centered, housing first, empowerment approach to prevent homelessness. Single Adults seeking emergency shelter through the Adult Shelter Connect will be helped to identify immediate alternate housing arrangements and, if necessary, a connection to services and financial assistance to help them return to housing. The diversion program will help our community achieve better outcomes by reducing the number of households becoming homeless, improve the ability of our homeless response system to target shelter resources effectively, and most importantly, help individuals avoid an episode of homelessness. This position will utilize a variety of strategies to divert individuals seeking shelter and will work to empower persons to chart their own path back to stable housing and then assist in implementing that path. The Diversion Specialist will work with individuals seeking shelter to: 1. Identify and implement strategies that will prevent them from having to actually enter shelter. 2. Secure permanent housing (if the immediate alternative to shelter isn t permanent). This is a full-time position that includes primarily daytime hours but some evenings and weekends may be necessary. Participant populations include those with chemical dependency, criminal histories, trauma, grief, and/or mental health issues. Employee must be knowledgeable about and able to respond effectively to the complexities of individual s lives and the challenges and conditions associated with homelessness.
